Perplexity AI, the startup backed by NVIDIA and known for its AI-powered search engine, has unveiled Comet, its first AI-powered web browser.
Unlike traditional browsers such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, Comet reimagines the browsing experience from the ground up by eliminating tab overload and integrating AI into every interaction.
At its core, Comet is designed for productivity-focused users, those who rely heavily on the web for research, work, and daily digital tasks.
Perplexity says the browser is not about managing tabs, but about managing tasks. With Comet, the browser becomes an intelligent workspace rather than just a window into the internet.
In a blog post, Perplexity explains that Comet aims to collapse complex workflows into fluid, conversational interactions. For example, users can ask Comet to summarize a webpage, draft an email, schedule a meeting, or get a day’s overview, without jumping across apps.
One of Comet’s most striking features is the Comet Assistant, a built-in AI agent accessible at the top right of the browser window.
This assistant can read the page you’re on and help with contextual tasks, summarizing emails, reviewing calendar events, or managing multiple websites. It acts as your digital co-pilot, reducing the mental load of constant context-switching.
A key departure from traditional web browsers is Comet’s workspace interface. Instead of multiple tabs crowding your view, everything you’re working on is organized into a unified dashboard.
The browser intelligently tracks what you’ve read, what you’re currently browsing, and what you may need next. Based on this, it surfaces suggestions, reminders, and relevant news, essentially becoming a proactive assistant, not just a passive tool.
Comet can also close inactive sessions, manage your open content smartly, and even integrate messaging platforms like LinkedIn, reducing the need to shuffle between dozens of tabs.
While not all features have been officially confirmed, based on Perplexity’s past track record, we can anticipate:
- AI-First Browsing: Search, summarize, and interact with content in real-time.
- Minimal UI, Maximum Focus: A clean, decluttered interface that prioritizes workflow.
- Native Perplexity Search Integration: Possibly replacing traditional search engines entirely.
Perplexity has not yet announced pricing for Comet. However, it may follow the freemium model seen in its search engine offering. This could mean a free tier for basic use and a Pro tier for advanced AI-powered tools. You can join the waitlist to use it.
While Comet is still new, its approach is refreshing in a space that hasn’t seen radical change in years. If Perplexity executes well, Comet could become the go-to browser for productivity power users, researchers, and anyone tired of tab chaos. For now, it’s a promising glimpse into the future of AI-integrated browsing.
