Instagram is evolving once again, this time by adding Repost, Interactive Map, and Friends Tab to its growing list of features. These tools, recently introduced by Meta, aim to enhance how users discover, share, and stay connected with their friends on the platform.
These updates bring a mix of familiar mechanics from other social apps and fresh ways to interact on Instagram, all with a strong focus on friendship, content discovery, and personalized sharing.
Repost: Twitter-Like Sharing Comes to Instagram
The biggest and most talked-about addition is the Repost button. Much like Twitter’s “Retweet” (now on X), Instagram users can now reshare Reels or Posts directly to their feed. This new button will appear below every post and reel, making it easy to share content you love.
Once you repost, your followers will see it in their feed, and it will be marked with a “bubble” indicating that you’ve reposted it. Even better, reposts now get their own dedicated tab on your profile, helping others quickly browse the content you’ve chosen to highlight.

Add a Personal Note to Your Repost
Instagram isn’t stopping at just resharing. The Repost feature also allows users to add a note or short comment along with the shared post.
When tapping the repost button, a thought bubble will appear. Type your message, click “Save,” and your note will be added to your repost, allowing for more context, emotion, or humor behind your share.
This update offers a more expressive and meaningful way to recommend content to friends or followers, going beyond just pressing “share.”
Interactive Map: Find Friends and Their Favorite Spots
Another major feature is the Interactive Map, which brings Instagram closer to Snapchat’s Snap Map. This feature allows users to share their live location with a select group of friends and also view where their friends are, if they choose to share it.
You’ll also be able to explore places where friends have posted content, making the map a visual diary of moments tied to real locations. This is especially useful for discovering travel inspiration, hidden gems, or just keeping up with where your circle is hanging out.
Privacy is built-in, of course, location sharing is opt-in and can be turned on or off at any time.
Friends Tab: Your Inner Circle, All in One Place
To tie it all together, Instagram has introduced the Friends Tab, a new section that lets you easily explore what your friends are posting, sharing, and engaging with. It’s a more intimate, curated version of your main feed, focused solely on content from people you know and care about.
This tab could be a game changer for users who feel overwhelmed by random algorithmic suggestions and want a more personalized browsing experience.
A Big Push Toward Social Intimacy
These new features mark a clear shift in Instagram’s approach, moving from a broad-based content platform toward more meaningful, friend-centered interactions.
With reposts, real-time maps, and tighter friend-based feeds, Instagram is looking to bring users back to the original essence of social media: connecting with people you know.
