Google has taken things to the next level with Gemini and NotebookLM in a world filled with AI-powered assistants and productivity tools. Here’s a breakdown of the strengths and weaknesses of both the AI tools and their ideal use cases.

Google Gemini sits right in your Google Workspace, which feels like a power-packed AI assistant. It gives you suggestions, summaries, and various smart or clever actions as you work because it’s integrated into Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Gmail.

On the other hand, NotebookLM is built with a proper research-focused intention. You can consider it as your personal research assistant, helping you connect ideas.

It’s best if you keep on uploading your own content like Docs, Notes, or PDFs, and you want an AI to help you synthesize that information into meaningful brainstorm sessions and summaries.

Google Gemini — AI Chatbot

Gemini is the generative AI chatbot by Google, just like ChatGPT, that can be used to generate answers based on provided text prompts.

It is a full-fledged AI tool that can be used to get answers to any questions, and generate article content, images, and even documents. Gemini also comes with ‘Deep Research’ option to get in-depth answers about anything.

Google has integrated Gemini in many of its apps, like Google Assistant, Docs, Gmail, Messages, and other applications.

I have tested Gemini in Google Docs and Gmail. In Docs, I used this tool to brainstorm blog post ideas and to draft outlines. It was impressive.

This tool won’t write a publish-ready article for you, but it gives you a great starting point. You may ask it to ‘summarise this document’ or ask to ‘turn this outline into a paragraph’, and it works.

In Gmail, it may help you write replies to the mail, shorten long threads, or help you clean up your writing. This isn’t the best, but it’s fast and can save time when you’re responding to lots of emails.

NotebookLM — Research Assistant

NotebookLM is a research-oriented AI agent developed by Google, that specifically use Gemini for deep research based on provided sources and documents.

NotebookLM feels like a research partner, as Gemini feels like a writing friend. When I uploaded some PDFs and notes from my lecture on a past project, NotebookLM gave me organized summaries. It even answered my question like “What was the debate about in Chapter 4?” with short, clear, and crisp answers.

The real power of this tool comes from how it links different ideas across documents. This tool even remembers what you upload and can help you make sense of scattered data. It is highly helpful for writers, researchers, and students.

NotebookLM doesn’t sit on top of your workspace, unlike Gemini. It’s a tool that you separately open and go deep with. It won’t ever try to be flashy. It’s useful and highly focused when you need to process a lot of information.

Which AI Tool to Use and for What?

Google Gemini is the go-to tool for anything you want to do with an AI assistant. You can ask questions, write content for articles, research, generate images, and do anything and everything that you can think to do with AI.

Let’s say, you need to clean up emails, make your daily workflow smoother, or polish your writing, use Google Gemini. It is great for marketers, professionals, small business owners, and anyone who lives inside Google Docs or Gmail.

If you’re working with your own knowledge bank, like research papers, articles, or notes, and you need an AI to help you, use NotebookLM, which can make sense. It’s made for authors, researchers, thinkers, and students.

Both tools help you in their own ways. During the workday, for quick tasks, I make use of Gemini, whereas I use NotebookLM when I need to sit down and research for heavy content
